Worked example

Count the atoms on each side.

Oxygen doesn’t match. Put a 2 in front of H₂O.

Now hydrogen doesn’t match. Put a 2 in front of H₂.

2H2 + O22H2O ✓

Count again — it’s balanced!

Why balance equations?

Atoms are never created or destroyed in a chemical reaction — they are only rearranged. That's the law of conservation of mass. A balanced equation shows the same number of each atom on both sides, so it describes what really happens.
